The Influence of the Bible on the Work of Fray Luis De León

Florence Mary Simpson, Fordham University

Abstract

Fray Luis de Leon, outstanding humanist of the Counter Reformation in Spain, was not only a learned theologian and professor of the University of Salamanca, but also a gifted prose writer and poet. He was a Platonist as well as a Scholastic and a Christian, with a Renaissance tendency to moderation and eclecticism. Although orthodox in theology, following closely the Augustinian line of thought, Fray Luis belonged to no school, standing consciously outside all the schools in the ardent pursuit of truth. In the search for Truth Itself, his constant guide was the Holy Bible.
