A Social History of the Westchester County Home, Hawthorne, New York, 1828-1949

Sally Elizabeth Walsh, Fordham University

Abstract

From October, 1947, to May, 1948, the writer did her field work placement at the Central Hudson District Office of the Westchester County Department of family and child. Welfare, which office is located in Tarrytown, New York. She has also worked on the social service staff of the Ossining District Office of the same department from June, 1948 until September, 1948. through her work in these offices, she was brought into contact with the Westchester County Home in Hawthorne, New York. The geographical proximity of this institution to the offices made this contact a closer and more direct one than it would have been other wise. This working relationship, combined with the fact that the author is a resident of Westchester County, interested her in adopting the social history of the Westchester County Home as a research topic for a dissertation.
