A Survey of Recent Criticism of Beowulf

Helen Mary Marks, Fordham University

Abstract

"The time has come to begin the study of Old English poetry as poetry." This is, indeed, good advice. However, Fr. Scargill has overlooked the fact that Professor Tolkien did just this in the field of Beowulf studies as early as 1936. Scholars of Old English have all recognized the impact of Tolkien's lecture. It has been a guidepost for the younger scholars in their researches and studies.
