A Comparison of Public Elementary School Education in Connecticut in the Time of Henry Barnard With That of the Same State Today in Regard to Educational Aims and Teacher Training

Abstract

It is the purpose of this dissertation to show through a comparison of the educational aims proposed by Barnard and his contemporaries with those advanced by some of the prominent Connecticut educators of today, the nature of the progress made in elementary education; likewise, by a comparison of the different methods employed. and the agencies instituted for the education and training of teachers for the common schools of a century ago with those accessible to the teachers of today, to set forth the higher standards of professional preparation required. and to show how this in return, has its effect on the· schools.The plan of the study is. first. to give a brief sketch of the life of Henry Barnard, stressing his relation to elementary education in Connecticut; secondly, to state the educational aims of Connecticut educators of a hundred years ago as found in their writings; than to treat those of the present day, especially those of Ernest W. Butterfield, present Commissioner of Education in Connecticut, in the same manner. The two periods, are then compared, similarities and differences noted and accounted for and conclusions drawn. In a similar manner, the methods and agencies of teacher training in vogue at the time of Henry Barnard, are treated. This, in turn, is followed by a study of teacher preparation in the state today, in its .Normal Schools and Teachers' College. There follows a comparison, with likenesses and differences pointed out improvements observed, and conclusions drawn. In the final chapter. the changes found in educational aims and teacher training a.re summed up and critically evaluate in the light of Christian principle of education. Then final conclusions on the state o:f elementary education in Connecticut today are drawn and where possible, accounted for.
