A Study of Backward Associations Established in Learning Paired Associates in the Forward Order

Abstract

The question of backward association in learning is not a new one. indeed, for more than fifty years, men have subjected the hypothesis to experimentation. Although many conflicting results have been obtained by the various investigators, Thorndike (10, p. 158) in 1932 made the following statement: "Polarity or the undirectlonal quality of mental connections is a more reasonable hypothesis today than ever before."
