The role of the principal in schools in need of improvement: Leadership for student achievement
The purpose of this study was to compare how two principals—one from a school recently removed from school in need of improvement (SINI) status and one that is still classified as SINI—created a School Leadership Team (SLT) and developed a school improvement plan to improve student achievement. The research included semi-structured interviews with two SINI principals and two members of the SLT from each school, observations of SLT meetings, and the review of documents related to school improvement. This comparative case study identified ways that can help principals in improving student achievement. First, the principal must be able to determine the starting point for improvement and build the skills and the knowledge of the members of his or her SLT. A principal should seek to engage the teachers, parents, and students in setting goals and implementing them. Principals should also be mindful of the perspective of the practitioners; without their understanding of the importance of the chosen method of school improvement, success will not be achieved.
