Abstract

Studying the transmission, prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS in prison is incredibly important. it is reported, "that 2.3 percent of all prison inmates are infected with HIV. The rate of confirmed cases of AIDs in the inmate population is more that six times that of the U.S. [general] population. Approximately one in every three inmate deaths is AIDS-related and AIDS is the leading cause of death among state inmates after 'illness and natural causes.'"1 Twenty-five percent of all HIV positive people in the United States, at one point make their way through the correctional system. With numbers like these, it is impossible to ignore the problem of HIV and AIDS in correctional facilities in the United States.2
