Abstract

The present thesis has been divided into six chapters. Chapter I, entitled as "Introduction" establishes the novelist among other Indo-Anglian novelists. Anita Desai, Kamala Markandaya, Ruth Prawar Jhabvala and Nayantara Sahgal are as significant novelist as Mulk Raj Anand, Raja Rao and R.K. Narayan. They tried to give a realistic picture of India in its poverty, squalor and oppression, and of the human suffering ensuing from the evils of an unjust social system. She ranks supreme amongst women novelists of the generation.Chapter II, entitled as "The Making of the Novelist" deals with her chequered genius and her prismatic poetic vision which is resulted from her liberal outlook. The impact of her knowledge in English classics and her knowledge of Hindu scriptures make her prolific novelist of Indo - Anglian fiction gifted with feminine sensibility had raised English language to lyrical heights. She polishes her sentences, Chisels her phrases and uses the technique of contrast between various settings, situations and characters.
