The scourge of the Sahel: Examining the rise of Boko Haram and modern violent extremism in West Africa
Abstract
Boko Haram is a relatively small but potent violent extremist group that now plagues northeastern Nigeria and has been responsible for the deaths of thousands. This Thesis is an examination driven by the aim of providing clarity on the historical drivers, tactics, and internal changes of this lesser known West African terrorist organization. It serves not only as a case study but also an advanced warning about an entity which is not only connected to the established multinational terrorist group al-Qa'ida, but also shares its ideologies and may one day seek to support, match, or surpass its lethal actions on the world stage.
