Parent-child interactions in children with temper outbursts: The role of expressed emotion and parental stress

Abstract

The goal of this study was to examine characteristics of parent-child interactions in children with severe temper outbursts. Based on the transactional model of child behaviors and findings from previous research, we posited that child disruptive behaviors would predict negative parent- child interactions. Furthermore, we hypothesized that parental stress and high levels of expressed emotion would moderate the relationship between child disruptive behaviors and negative parent-child interactions. The results of this study further elucidate the parent-child coercive, reciprocal relationship contributing to the development and maintenance of child temper outbursts.
