Moderators and Mediators of Treatment Outcome in Youth Anxiety Disorders: A Meta-Analysis

Emily Steinberg, Fordham University

Abstract

Evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have been established as effective treatments for child and adolescent anxiety disorders. However, as many as half of youth may not respond or only partially respond to such interventions, and prior research has yielded inconsistent results regarding the active ingredients in treatment and which prognostic factors are likely to lead to best treatment outcome. Meta-analysis was conducted to examine which factors moderated and mediated outcome among eight treatment trials for youth anxiety disorders. Meta-analytic procedures indicated small effect size for behavioral moderators (g = .31) and cognitive mediators (g = .39). Recommendations for further research and treatment approaches are discussed.
