Francis J O'Rourke, Fordham University

Abstract

Bernard de Bovier, Sieur de Fontenelle was born in 1657 at Rouen. From a literary family, the nephew of Corneille, he was educated in Jesuit schools, admitted to the bar and practiced law in Paris. Later, however, he abandoned law for literature. He was temperate, but fond of easy living.
