George Gissing: A Critical Study
Abstract
To estimate properly the value of a man's work, it is generally necessary to know the man. To know the worth of a literary production, it is well to know the talents the author could have brought to his writing and to weigh the use he has made of his talents. The work is conditioned by the temperament of the man. This is particularly true of George Gissing. A legend has grown up about this man which piles misery upon misery and makes the fact of his having written anything noteworthy a superhuman feat.
