The Effect of Acenaphthene on Mitosis in the Root Tips of Spinacia oleracea
Abstract
The effect of acenaphthene on mitosis in the root tip cells of Spinacia was one of a series of problems undertaken by the students of this Department for the purpose of making a comparative study of the effect of various alkaloids and other chemical agents on the meristematic root tissue of Allium and of Spinacia. At the present, there are no descriptions of the action of ace- naphthene upon the plant development and upon cell division in Spinacia. However, Levan (1940) and Kostoff (1938a, 1938b, and 1940) have performed a number of experiments which show the effect of acenaphthene on Allium root tips, and on Triticum and Secale seedlings.
