The Part Played by Jonathan Worth in the Reconstruction of North Carolina

Mary Catherine Garvey, Fordham University

Abstract

Jonathan Worth who played an important role in the reconstruction of North Carolina, prided himself chiefly on his record of persistent devotion to the Union. As a member of the State Senate in 1860 1861 he saw with alarm, the progress that was being made by the dis-union sentiment in the South. He was among the most active in endeavoring to prevent his own State from throwing it- self into the vortex of revolution. When, however, North Carolina seceded, Worth, together with other prominent Union men, recognized the de facto government. Acting in good faith toward it, he held the office of State Treasurer from 1862 until the State government was overthrown by the Federal forces in 1865.
