Hispanism and Localism in Pereda's Art

Carmen Viejo, Fordham University

Abstract

The aim of this study is an attempt to focus in detail the literary work of José María de Pereda on his two basic motives: his Hispanism and his localism, or in other words, Spain and his region. Because of the great importance attached to these two as inspiring motives for the novelist, an effort has been made first to trace his general attitude towards Spain and then to particularize, with emphasis, his attitude towards his province, which is an integral part of all his writings. To achieve this purpose, it is necessary to know Pereda as a man; to trace the conditions of his environment, his spiritual formation, the order of his ideas and his attitude towards his epoch. Hence the need for delineating well the man and his portrayal of customs in order to understand well the writer.
