A Cytological Reinvestigation of Microsporogenesis of Luzula purpurea

Margaret M Truland, Fordham University

Abstract

In 1947 there was published by Nydia Malheiros, Duarte de Castro and A. Camara a report of their cytological investigation of Luzula purpurea Link, a Fortuguese rush. Their study of this plant followed an earlier investigation of the number of chromosomes in several species of the genus Luzula (Malheiros and Garde 1947). They found in Luzula purpurea the diploid number of 2n6, all the other species having diploid numbers of 12 and 24. In addition to the low chromosome number of this plant, there were revealed by further study many interesting and unusual facts about the behavior and morphology of the chromosomes.
