The Vilna Dispute, 1919-1923

Christopher T. Garrahan, Fordham University

Abstract

Before one can analyze or come to any decision on a dispute, a knowledge not only of the facts of the problem, but also of the combatants must be obtained as a prerequisite for an adequate study of the matter, otherwise, a rank injustice may be rendered one of the parties. In the Vilna problem the contestants are Poland and Lithuania. In order to be just to both nations it would seem appropriate to give a brief resume of the relations of the two countries concerned, prior to 1919. In this way a better view will be acquired of their cultural, political and social differences and similarities. It is only through this fundamental step of comparison that the problem can be understood and a possible solution acquired.
