Saint Francis de Sales as Seen Through His Correspondence
Abstract
In the duchy of Savoy, a small kingdom separating the countries of France and Italy, on August 21, 1567, was born Francis de Sales, the eldest son of Francois de Sales, Lord of Nouvelles, and of Francoise de Sionnas, from whose rich dowry her husband bore the name of Boisy. Destined for a legal career, the youth, after completing his humanities at the College of Annecy, was sent to Paris, where he studied rhetoric and philosophy at the Jesuit school of Clermont. From there he went to Padua, to take up the study of law, which course he followed for al- most four years, receiving his doctorate with great honors.
