The Metaphysical and Moral Good According to Saint Thomas Aquinas

Robert P Goodwin, Fordham University

Abstract

When one looks around himself in the world and studies the living habits of the people he might very well come to the conclusion that, basically, there are only two ways of living. The same holds true for the historian who goes deeply into the lives of historical characters. The two ways of living are, first, the ways of self-satisfaction, and secondly, the way of doing good and avoiding evil according to objective laws. The first way is characterized by what might be called a taking of all that the world offers in the way of pleasure, with no restraint whatsoever. There are many pleasures in this world in which a man might indulge himself. There are the pleasures of the palate, the pleasures of sex, the pleasures of power, the pleasures of honor.
