Sepulchral Poetry in Nineteenth Century Italy
Abstract
Although graveyard or sepulchral poetry, in one or more of its aspects, can be traced back to the early Thirteenth century, it is not until the middle of the Eighteenth that it gains a short-lived fame as a literary genre and this, due to Edward Young's Night thoughts (1742- 1745). This graveyard poetry, concerning itself with the problem of life and death, through the medium of deep, often somber meditations and reflections and taking as its backdrop one or more of its constituent elements, that is, night, moonlight, ruins, soft melancholy or deep gloom and the tomb, flourishes especially in England during the Eighteenth century, because it easily lends itself to the English temperament and the Christian outlook of the era.
