A Longitudinal Study of the Readability of Text and Advertizing Copy, Including the Recent Trends in Important Physical Characteristics of Advertizements

Kendall I Trenchard, Fordham University

Abstract

Even the most casual student of advertising today may pause reflectively when he encounters the quotation from the Idler written by Ben Johnson about the status of advertising in his times: "The trade of advertising is now so near to perfection, that it is not easy to propose any improvement."When advertising is described in our times, it may also seem to have reached its zenitn in development. Yet, it requires only a cursory examination of its history to reveal that continual growth not only has taken place, but also, on the basis of these strides, will probably continue to take place. Perpetual progress seems to be the keynote in advertising, as it is an integral part of our free economy.
