A Comparative Study of the Anatomy of the Leaves of Ilex opaca and Ilex verticillata

Norman Peter Batt, Fordham University

Abstract

Ilex opaca, the familiar American Holly, is a typical ever-green species of the Aquifoliaceae, and Ilex verticillata, Black Alder or Winterberry, is typical of the deciduous forms of this family. Both species bear conspicuous berries, are much used for decorative purposes, and are known as the Christmas Hollies. The plants are quite ornamental and I. opaca is frequently planted where the more showy English Holly, Ilex aquifolium, is not hardy.
