Selected Aspects of the Sociological Content of the Jesuit Relations of New France
Abstract
The contributions to sociological knowledge derived from the analysis of personal documents have been highly evaluated by numerous specialists concerned with the scientific study of human behavior. In spite of this, the developments and use of such a promising method has been surprisingly slow as the majority of sociologists, in reaction against the earlier emphasis on conceptualization, have preferred to work with the "cold, hard facts." Consequently, primary research and contemporary events have received priority in sociological studies, and the personal document method, notwithstanding its positive values, has attracted few followers.
