The Spider's Path: An Adaptation of Richard III by William Shakespeare, Submitted by Helen C. Petretti
Abstract
RICHARD III or THE TRAGIC HISTORY OF RING RICHARD III is perhaps the strongest melodrama that William Shakespeare ever wrote. It is full of cloak and dagger plots, sudden deaths, and the anguished remorse of a merciless villain. As a melodrama it has been blood-curdlingly interpreted in onve manner or another by some of the greatest actors the world has ever known. Many of these actors were known for their Hanlet, their Macbeth, and their Richard III. A series of staggering hump-backed yowling villains have stomped across the stage in the firm belief that they were attaining the height of dramatic art in this role. Perhaps this is so, but upon investigation of the literature on this subject, it would seem rather that never has a play been so misinterpreted in such a variety of ways.
