Opinion Concerning the Cistercian Order, 1098-1153
Abstract
The humble beginnings of the Cistercian Order was a climax to the failure of a small group of earnest monks to achieve a thorough reform of the abbey of Molesme, a Benedictine house near Dijon in Burgundy. Their successful attempt to realize their aims in new surroundings initiated a movement that profoundly affected the thought and actions of much of twelfth-century society.
