A Glossary of Topical Allusions in Edmund Spenser's Shepheardes Calender

Phyllis Elaine Hollar, Fordham University

Abstract

Topicality in poetry has been a common literary phenomenon from the time of Aristophanes to that of our present day poets. Though allusiveness or reference to contemporary life is rarely the raison d'etre of any important poem it constitutes at least part of the semantic structure of the work in which it exists.
