The Cistercian Order in England During the Reign of King John, 1199-1216
Abstract
In the year 1128 there came to Waverley, in the county of Surrey, a band of White Monks. The event is of some import- ance, for with the entrance of the Cistercian Order into Eng- land a new chapter in English ecclesiastical history was begun. Some seventy-one years later another and what proved to be a more memorable incident occured, an event which was to have far reaching consequences for both the Order and the realm of England. In 1199 John, the youngest and onetime landless son of Henry of Anjou and Eleanor of Aquitaine, succeeded his brother Richard the Lion-Heart to the throne of England.
