Federal Regulation of Bank Holding Companies
Abstract
The banking structure of the United States is comprised of thousands of relatively small single-office banks, some very large banks, and a considerable number of banks, small and large, with branches. Their charters are issued by Federal or State authorities and supervision is exercised by the chartering agency. State banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System, or whose deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, come under the supervision of both the Federal and the State government.
