A Comparison of Two Cycles of English Mystery Plays Ludus Coventriae or Plaie Called Corpus Chrisi and the Towneleys Plays
Abstract
The Ludus Coventriae and the Towneley Plays are excellent examples of a blending of the clerical and secular in- fluences upon the drama. The Ludus Coventriae seems to adhere more closely to a clerical interpretation of the subject matter, while the Towneley Plays, on the other hand, reflect the spirit and tastes of the lay people of medieval England. This thesis will attempt to show, by a presentation of the differences of the two cycles, the truth of the preceding statement.
