Design in Anthony Trollope's Novels of the Barchester Series
Abstract
The novels of Anthony Trollope, which are concerned with the society of the imaginary county of Barset in south-western England and of its capital, the Cathedral city of Barchester, reveal a remarkable continuity of thought and development. They were not written consecutively, as direct sequels one to another. The writing and publication of the novels that have Barsetshire as their background stretch over a period of fourteen years with other novels, articles, and a variety of literary activities interspersed between them.
