Leopoldo Alas: The Man and the Critic

Samuel J O'Neill, Fordham University

Abstract

In the literary history of every nation, there are men who have fallen into oblivion for one reason or another, and who had to be rediscovered by succeeding generations. Leopoldo Alas was such a figure in Spain. His creative works, novels and short stories, have been popular, but his critical articles have been very neglected until recent years. His reputation as a radical thinker, the invective and bitterness of his satire, and accusations of partiality and superficiality have all contributed their share to his disregard. Such omission is not limited to the contemporary scene.
