An Analysis of the Form and Content of John Donne's First Anniversary: An Anatomy of the World

Francis Arsenault, Fordham University

Abstract

The poetical works of John Donne have commanded a particular interest for both the critic and the student of poetry of the past fifty years. Ever since Professor Herbert Grierson's edition of Donne's poems appeared in 1912, the poet's reputation has been steadily growing. To what can Donne's twentieth-century popularity be attributed? Partly perhaps to the mystification caused by the term "metaphysical" which was associated with Donne and the poets of his school, but mostly to a genuine quality of his poetry which seems to make it more appropriate to our age than the poetry of most of his contemporaries.
