The Artisan in the Plays of Thomas Dekker
Abstract
The actual position of the artisan in the time of Thomas Dekker was not tee happy. The feudal system in England was in an advanced stage of decay. The great landowner no longer wanted to be responsible for the feed and ledging of a large number of dependents. The great landowner, in fact, was sometimes having trouble keeping himself in a manner befitting his station. Wealth no longer consisted of bread acres producing feed for the baren, his family, his military retainers and their families, and a large number of agricultural workers and their families.
