Abstract

When Michael Williams, founder of The Commonweal, first announced that the new magazine would be a Catholic review of "literature and public affairs" he had also heralded the beginning of a new era in Catholic journalism. Catholic magazines had, of course, existed prior to this time, but The Commonweal was the first magazine edited and published by laymen to gain national recognition,
