Joan Mary Farrell, Fordham University

Abstract

The literary history of Eighteenth Century England is a curious and fascinating study, full of paradoxes and surprises. This paper endeavors to examine one small part of the broad complexus: the circulating library. Finding its beginnings in the first half of the century, this institution enjoyed an immense vogue. It had a popu lar appeal for the Bighteenth Century public, and exer- cises that same appeal for readers of today.
