A Study of the Short Fictional Works of Guillaume de Machaut

Paula Prokopoff, Fordham University

Abstract

Little is known of Machaut's origins or early life. It is supposed he was born around 1300, in the village of Machault, now a chef lieu de canton in the department of Ardennes. Nothing is known about the poet's family; it is safe to assume that they did not belong to the nobility. Almost nothing is known of his studies, except that Machaut is referred to, in 1371, as maître-es-arts. It is likely that, based on references to himself as "clerc" and "mattre," he was a student enrolled at some Faculté de Théologie.
