A Study of Skelton's Bouge of Court
Abstract
The Bouge of Court, written by John Skelton and pub- 11shed by synken de orde in 1499, is a satire cost in the form of a dream-vision allegory. It shares in the conventionalities associated with the genre astrological dating, self-deprecatory tone, aureate pleonasm and rime royal stanza.2 Its concise and dramatic structure make it a piece worthy of close study. While it cannot be classed with the truly 'great' works of literature, it has, nevertheless, merited praiseworthy comments from the critics.
