Matthew Arnold: The Problem of the Imagination

Charles R Inserillo, Fordham University

Abstract

Upon investigating a problem so complicated as that of the taste of a man of letters, one finds that it is essential to adopt a particular point of view toward the body of his work lest its very breadth preclude any but the most casual comment. The remarks and suggestions that comprise the body of this paper reflect such a limited point of view and are in no way intended to be absolute pronouncements upon Arnold or his work. On the contrary, it is to be hoped that they will prove to be suggestive of future investigation.
