Henri P Habib, Fordham University

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study the political parties of Belgium and their role in the political life of that country. Today political parties are of the utmost importance in the political life of a country. Through parties, especially in democratic countries the people express themselves politically. In addition it becomes interesting to study the parties in Belgium because that country has been a land of experiment in the electoral problems where devices such as limited suffrage, plural voting, compulsory voting and pro- portional representation have been given a thorough trial. It is interesting to see the effect that some of these devices have had on the parties. Also, the linguistic, religious, and economic problems in Belgium have aroused strong political feelings among the Belgians; the political parties have tried to that effect to find an electoral system which would give these feelings their freest outlet.
