Sarah Orne Jewett as an Artist

Joan M Duffy, Fordham University

Abstract

The Haggens mansion was the finest house in South Berwick, Maine, on the shores of the Piscataqua River, when it was bought by Thomas Furber Jewett, the eminently successful, retired sea captain, shipowner and merchant, in the year 1819. It was in this same house, thirty years later that his granddaughter, Sarah Orne, was born.
