Gautier de Coincy and Les Miracles de la Sainte Vierge

Mary Gabriel McDonald, Fordham University

Abstract

The spires of the great Cathedrals of the Middle Ages scar majestically upward, piercing the sky in eloquent tes- timony of an era's almost unbelievable devotion to the Mother of God. Side by side with these monuments in stone stand the written testaments of this love, the words which are so many gems in Mary's crown and which are unfortunate- ly too little-known, and rarely explored. If we are only sincere in our efforts to investigate them, our endeavours will be well-rewarded. In studying the literary expression of this great popular devotion, we are perceiving at its very center the French Middle Ages, and putting the key to the look, opening the door to the life and culture of an age which has often been woefully misunderstood.
