A Cytological Study of Spermatogenesis in Desmognathus phoca

Ronald Joseph Geczik, Fordham University

Abstract

During the past sixty years, a considerable amount of research has been done on spermatogenesis in Amphibia. Prominent among the early workers in this field were Flemming (1887), McGregor (1889), Eisen (1900), Montgomery (1900), and Kingsbury (1902). These early papers were confined almost completely to studies of the anatomy of the testis, the spermatogenic cycle, ecology and breeding habits. Some of these papers dealt with meiosis, but in the light of today's knowledge, these are only of historic value. Flemming's work is still considered to be a classi- cal cytological paper. He clarified not only spermatogene- sis, but also somatic mitosis. Eisen's study contributed to our knowledge of the morphology of the amphibian chro- mosome.
