Henry de France and His Role in the Schism of 1159

Bernard F Twomey, Fordham University

Abstract

One of the most difficult tasks confronting any his- torian is the proper evaluation of an historical person. Long years of research can go into determining a man's im- paot and influence on the period in which he lives and moves. When the subject is a more famous name in history, and when the evidence of his historioal importance has been practically exhausted, there may still be a great number of theories and unanswered questions concerning him. Then the subject of historical investigation is a secondary figure about whom little has been said in general histories, the problem assumes greater proportions. Such is the case of Henry of France, brother of King Louis of France, prince, Cistercian monk and bishop.
