Bellarmine's Knowledge of Anglicana
Abstract
Early in the seventeenth century, King James of England, overriding the counsel of his ministers, entered into public controversy with Robert Cardinal Bellarmine. It was, of course, striking sparks around heaped-up gunpowder for one to champion and one to challenge the unlimited dominion of sovereigns over subjects. The debate spun out over an alert audience both in England, moving toward Cromwellianism, and in Europe, torn by pol- itical and religious strife.
