Comparison of the Siège de Barbastre and the Bueves de Commarchis

Thomas E Vesce, Fordham University

Abstract

The subject of this paper is a comparison of the Siège de Barbastre and the Bueves de Conmarchis, two chansons from the Geste de Monglane. The two epics tell the same story about the Christian defense of the Spanish town of Barbastro against the Saracens, but as the second chanson mentioned was written approximately one-hundred and fifty years after the first, it will be seen that the ideas stressed in the one are not as prominent in the other. It will be shown that this change in emphasis is due to the change in literary tastes which took place between 1150 and 1300, the approximate dates when the two poems are supposed to have been written,
