French Influence on the Foreign Policy of John III Sobieski, 1674-1676

Edward F. Wall, Fordham University

Abstract

The election of John Sobieski as king of Poland came after a quarter century of warfare and intense confusion in all of eastern Europe and particularly in Poland. Upon the death of King Ladislas IV in 1648, his brother, John Casimir, renounced the cardinalate and was elected king. Among other problems he inherited was the Cossack revolt under the lead- ership of Hetman Bogdan Chmielnicki.
