The Study of Willa Cather's Literary Theory as Exemplified in Her Novels
Abstract
This thesis is concerned with an examination of the development of Willa Cather’s literary theory as revealed chiefly in her novels and less extensively in her short stories and in her own critical writing. It is the contention of this study that Willa Cather was a highly conscious literary artist^ and that she studied earnestly such literary artists as Henry James and Edith Wharton as well as Turgenev and Flaubert. The influence of Virgil and her classical training will also be considered in this examination of the development of her literary art.
