An Investigation of the Existence of an Airplane Pilot Appearance Stereotype
Abstract
The term stereotype, as popularly understood, originated in the publishing business relative to a process of newspaper mass production. As related by Buchanan (1), a thin metal "stereotype" plate was developed in 1870 which could be delivered through the mails. "By 1877 some 1,100 of America’s 1,800 daily papers could put before their readers the same political cartoon more cheaply than they could write or set their own news."
