Christopher Dawson's Theory of the Relation Between Religion and Culture

Paul Kenny, Fordham University

Abstract

"Mutatis mutandis, it seems to us that there has arisen in our times another John the Baptist. We think that the voice of Christopher Henry Dawson, the eminent English historian of culture, may be considered as that of "one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." With the conviction and consistency of an Old-Testament figure the "Catholic Spengler" warns us that we have neglected the religious roots of our civilisation at our own peril. Total collapse of this civilization is inevitable unless we succeed in salvaging the religious principles that once did give, and now again can give, unity and stability and direction to it.
